Design Thinking Workshop by Amy Collier and Bob Cole
This week, Amy Collier is traveling to the Middlebury Institute for International Studies in Monterey, CA to facilitate a workshop on design thinking with Bob Cole from the Digital Learning Commons for the Envisioning Middlebury Steering Committee (EMSC).
Envisioning Middlebury is an exploration of identity that inspires conversations so as to produce ideas to create Middlebury’s new strategic direction. Through these conversations, students, faculty, staff, and alumni lend their thoughts, ideas, and opinions about Middlebury’s mission and future.
The design thinking workshop is part of an Envisioning Middlebury trip that will give the EMSC a chance to meet together in person and to explore creative and critical approaches to writing strategic directions for Middlebury.
The Envisioning Middlebury process will include a Middlebury Digital Summit to provide an opportunity for the Middlebury community to consider how the institution’s diverse community and programs might intersect with and coalesce in the digital realm.
As part of the lead up to the summit, organizers are inviting brief reflections from faculty, staff, and students from across Middlebury. Reflections will be published on the Digital Summit website.
Organizers invite you to contribute by responding in writing to this prompt:
- What does the digital mean to you?
- Why should the digital be part of the strategic conversation?
- In what ways might the digital serve as a transformative force at Middlebury?
Posts can be 250 – 300 words. Links, images, and other forms of media are welcomed. You can send your reflection to Mike Roy via email at email@example.com.
On April 5, Sean Michael Morris published a post on the ODL blog about creativity and the digital. This post was was also included in Reflections on the Digital, a collection of brief posts leading up to the Digital Summit later this month. Sean’s post, entitled The Digital Is About Doing, invites us to find ways to experiment playfully with the digital as a way of figuring out what the digital means to us.
In his post, Sean encourages the reader to embrace agency in the digital realm. He writes: ” It is not about doing something right, or doing what someone else tells us we can or cannot do. Agency is our most natural reaction to the world. And we can react this way to the digital, too. We don’t have to be the merry aficionados, nor the contemplative pragmatists. We can engage the digital as we are moved to engage it. Knowing what’s possible only gives us a landscape; discovering what we want to do, where we want to drive on that landscape, is vastly more important.”
We invite you read this and other posts on the Reflections on the Digital website.
