Sean Michael Morris to Present at Domains 17

The Office of Digital Learning’s Sean Michael Morris will be presenting at Domains 17: Indie EdTech and Other Curiositiesan annual educational technology conference focused on institutional initiatives to support individual web domains, better known as Domain of One’s Own. Domains of One’s Own is a project born out of the University of Mary Washington in 2012, which has since been adopted by more than 40 colleges and universities. At Middlebury, the Domain of One’s Own project is supported with MiddCreate.

This year, Domains 17 will be co-hosted by the University of Oklahoma and Reclaim Hosting in Oklahoma City on Monday and Tuesday, June 5-6, 2017. Sean will be delivering a presentation entitled “If bell hooks Made a Learning Management System”, which will ask critical questions of LMSs like Canvas, and propose that the Domains project may offer an alternative to standard online learning platforms—one which is better positioned to support student agency, nurture community, and ignite digital activism.

If you or someone you know would be interested in this exciting opportunity, we invite the submission of applications for the digital learning internship by April 7, 2017. Please contact Amy Collier if you would like to apply.

Daily Connect Pilot Launch

The Office of Digital Learning, together with the Digital Learning Commons in Monterey and the Academic Technology Group in Middlebury, is considering the launch of a 30-day pilot program called Daily Connect as part of an initiative to create opportunities to connect and collaborate across the institution. The Daily Connect consists of fun, low threshold, creative digital challenges created to help people get to know one another better so as to inspire new ideas and professional collaborations.

The proposed pilot would take place over a 30 day period, during which time participants would be invited to respond each week to three Daily Connect challenges. The 30 day pilot creates an opportunity for continued design of low threshold challenges, new forms of interaction, and connections. Beyond the 30 day pilot, our three groups would envision continuing activity in a digital “community of practice” environment that builds on the action areas for in-facing communication and coordination, as well as invitations to share our work and projects in outward facing ways.
