Write Like A Scientist – A Guide to Scientific Communication

In collaboration with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Program for Environmental Studies, our office is developing an online resource for scientific writing. It aims to help at all stages of training and experience. The guide, called Write Like a Scientist – A Guide to Scientific Communication, is a critical resource for scientific writers at all stages of training and experience. It provides guidelines for effective writing and offers considerations, patterns and tools to help learners along the way. The WLaS approach teaches writers about the choices they need to make in order to write effectively for multiple audiences and purposes. By providing numerous examples from published work, Write Like a Scientist offers users the ability to pull from an established resource while practicing to make those choices for themselves.

The site will feature Scientific Writing Essentials that presents basic writing features, considerations and tasks that all scientific writers need to understand in order to write effectively such as references, organization and scientific language. The guide also includes sections entitled Genres and Disciplines that detail how to write for specific genres and specify conventions by scientific discipline (Biology, Chemistry etc).

We expect Write Like a Scientist – A Guide to Scientific Communication to launch in the coming months.
