MiddCreate Spotlight: Briana Garrett

Another MiddCreate Spotlight post!

MiddCreate Spotlight is ODL’s newest blog series that features interesting MiddCreate sites created by Middlebury students, faculty or programs outside of the Office of Digital Learning. MiddCreate is an initiative at Middlebury that offers faculty, staff, and students their own subdomain spaces and easy installation of  open-source applications such as WordPress, ownCloud, MediaWiki, Drupal, Known, Scalar, and Omeka, among others. Last week, we highlighted a MiddCreate site created by Briana Garrett, a student at Middlebury College.

Briana was kind enough to answer some questions we asked her about her work with MiddCreate. We asked her questions ranging from the purpose of her MiddCreate site to any plans for further development. The Office of Digital Learning encourages our readers to check-out Briana’s MiddCreate site here.

Portuguese Hub at Schools Abroad Directors Meeting

At the annual Schools Abroad (SA) Directors meeting, held this year in Rabat, Morocco, the Director of the Middlebury CV Starr School Abroad in Brazil, Silvia Lorenso, provided a preview to SA directors of the Portuguese Hub. The Portuguese Hub is currently under development by the Office of Digital Learning in collaboration with members of the various Portuguese learning departments across Middlebury. Silvia as well as faculty and staff from the Language Schools, Schools Abroad, the Undergraduate College, and MIIS have begun the creation of a digital hub where students and speakers of Portuguese can connect and learn together.

The Portuguese hub is a community language-learning site, created using WordPress on MiddCreate. The hub will include a modular path of language study that crosses the programs, a student blog area, a self-study language learning area, and a list of resources. It will also provide information about how students can participate in Middlebury’s diverse Portuguese programs and offer a place for Middlebury students across those programs to connect around their shared interest in the language, and where they can stay up-to-date with Portuguese/Brazilian culture and news. The ODL is enjoying incorporating some new functionalities into this hub as well, such as an interactive landing page image leading site visitors along the path.
